On January 22, 1879, during the Anglo-Zulu wars, at the little mission station of Rorke's Drift, 124, including wounded, British soldiers held off and defeated 4,000 Zulu attackers, causing around 1,000 causalities among the enemy, before dawn. 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded for the gallantry, courage, and heroism shown at Rorke's Drift. You can read an excellent summation of the battle here, at The Mad Monarchist.
To-day, then, is the 133rd anniversary of the little battle that once again showed the heroic nature of the British army.
